Switchgear

An electrical power system or commonly referred to as Switchgear, is the combination of switches, fuses and circuit breakers. Switchgears primary function is work alongside the control system to help control the electrical product, but also to ensure is safe usage and to isolate particular electrical equipment where necessary. In the modern world many manufacturers are looking to become "greener", which emphasises the importance of using the correct switchgear product due to it being directly linked to the reliability of the entire electrical supply.

Switchgear has evolved with time, from using simple open knife switches to now using air-blast, vacuum or SF6 equipment. Thus allowing larger currents to be controlled safely and automatically. Predominantly switchgear is split into 3 different categories Low Voltage (LV), Medium Voltage (MV) and High Voltage (HV), which can be used with voltages up to 1,100kv.

As a Specialist Recruitment Consultancy within the Lighting and Electrical market, it has become apparent to us that LV Switchgear is typically used in more of a commercial building environment for the transformers, with MV Switchgear for distribution circuits and protection . Whereas for Industrial applications such as Substations, you will more commonly find HV Switchgear products being used.

Switchgear like many other similar niche markets have traditionally tried to recruit candidates who have a specific product background, but in recent times especially within the LV sector we have seen a change to the tradition. Candidates from a cable, relay or driver background (not exclusive to) have made the transition across to your established Switchgear manufacturers and those that are new to the market offering innovative solutions.
